Poll: Many say let illegal immigrants stay in US

WASHINGTON (AP) ? More than 6 in 10 Americans now favor allowing illegal immigrants to eventually become U.S. citizens, a major increase in support driven by a turnaround in Republicans' opinions after the 2012 elections.

The finding, in a new Associated Press-GfK poll, comes as the Republican Party seeks to increase its meager support among Latino voters, who turned out in large numbers to help-re-elect President Barack Obama in November.

Emboldened by the overwhelming Hispanic backing and by shifting attitudes on immigration, Obama has made overhauling laws about who can legally live in the U.S. a centerpiece of his second-term agenda. In the coming weeks, he's expected to aggressively push for ways to create an eventual pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants already in this country.

The poll results suggest that the public overall, not just Hispanics, will back his efforts. Sixty-two percent of Americans now favor providing a way for illegal immigrants in the U.S. to become citizens, an increase from just 50 percent in the summer of 2010, the last time the AP polled on the question.

In an even earlier poll, in 2009, some 47 percent supported a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.

Further boosting the president on the issue, Democrats have opened a 41 percent to 34 percent advantage as the party more trusted to handle immigration, the first time they've held a significant edge on the matter in AP-GfK polling. In October 2010, Republicans held a slight edge over Democrats, 46 percent to 41 percent, on the question of who was more trusted on immigration.

Much of the increase in support for a path to eventual citizenship has come among Republicans. A majority in the GOP ? 53 percent ? now favor the change. That's up a striking 22 percentage points from 2010. Seventy-two percent of Democrats and 55 percent of independents like the idea, similar to 2010.

The findings suggest that those GOP lawmakers weighing support for eventual legal status for illegal immigrants could be rewarded politically not just by Democrats and independents but also by some in their own party as well. This comes amid soul-searching in the party about how the GOP can broaden its support with Latinos, who backed Obama over Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, 71 percent to 27 percent, in November. Romney received less support from Latinos than Republican President George W. Bush did. But his slice was on par with candidates Bob Dole in 1996 and George H.W. Bush in 1992.

Some Republicans have concluded that backing comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship is becoming a political necessity. Many lawmakers remain strongly opposed, and it's far from clear whether Congress will ultimately sign off on such an approach. But in the Senate, a bipartisan group of lawmakers is working to draft immigration legislation, and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a possible 2016 presidential candidate, has offered proposals that would ultimately allow illegal immigrants to attain legal status.

One poll participant, Nick Nanos, 66, of Bellmore, N.Y., said that providing a way for illegal immigrants to become citizens would respect America's history as a nation built by immigrants.

"We act as if our grandparents got here legally. Don't want to ask a single Indian about that," Nanos said in a follow-up interview. "I don't think that most of us can solidly come to a point where our grandparents or great-grandparents or great-great-grandparents were here legally. What does that even mean?"

Overall, 54 percent in the poll said immigration is an important issue to them personally, a figure that's remained steady over the past couple of years.

Republicans aren't the only group whose views have shifted significantly. In August of 2010, just 39 percent of seniors favored a path to citizenship. Now, 55 percent do. Among those without a college degree, support has increased from 45 percent to 57 percent.

And 59 percent of whites now favor a way for illegal immigrants to gain citizenship, up from 44 percent in August 2010, and 41 percent in September 2009.

Overall, the poll found 35 percent strongly favored allowing illegal immigrants to become citizens over time, while 27 percent favored the idea somewhat. Just 35 percent of Americans opposed the approach, with 23 percent strongly opposed and 12 percent somewhat opposed. That compared with 48 percent opposed in 2010 and 50 percent in 2009.

The poll also found strong support for Obama's decision, announced last summer, to shield as many as 800,000 immigrants from deportation with conditions. Those affected would have to be younger than 30, would have to have been brought to the U.S. before turning 16 and would have to fulfill certain other conditions including graduation from high school or serving in the military. Illegal immigrants covered by the order now can apply for work permits. The order bypassed Congress, which has not passed "DREAM Act" legislation to achieve some of the same goals for younger illegal immigrants.

Sixty-three percent of Americans favor that policy, while 20 percent oppose it and 17 percent are in between or unsure, the poll said. The policy is supported by 76 percent of Democrats, significantly more than among Republicans (48 percent) or independents (59 percent).

Cordel Welch, 41, of Los Angeles, was among those poll participants who believes illegal immigrants brought to the country as children should be treated differently from people who came here as adults.

"The ones that were brought here by their parents, they're already here, they're already established," Welch said in an interview. "The adults should go through the process."

Melissa Johnson, 40, of Porter, Texas, disagreed.

"I think there were generations of people that came over here legally, and just because your parents snuck you in or snuck in while pregnant with you doesn't give you automatic citizenship," she said. "I think they should send them all back home."

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted Jan. 10-14, 2013, by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,004 adults nationwide. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points; the margin is larger for subgroups.

AP source: Oregon promotes OC Helfrich to coach

Oregon hired Mark Helfrich as its football coach Sunday, promoting him from offensive coordinator to be Chip Kelly's successor.

Two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed the decision to The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the school had not announced it. The school scheduled an afternoon news conference. The move was first reported by CBSSports.com.

Kelly stepped down at Oregon on Wednesday to coach the Philadelphia Eagles. Helfrich's promotion does not come as a surprise. Before Kelly left for the NFL, the offensive coordinator was considered the front-runner for the position.

The Ducks also promoted wide receivers coach Scott Frost, the former Nebraska quarterback, to offensive coordinator, according to those who spoke with the AP.

Oregon, ranked No. 2 in the final AP Top 25, went 12-1 this season capped by a victory over Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl.

Helfrich is from Oregon and was appointed offensive coordinator of the Ducks when Kelly took over four seasons ago. The Ducks have appeared in BCS bowls each of those four years, including an appearance in the national championship game against Auburn in 2011.

Before joining the Ducks, the 39-year old Helfrich was quarterbacks coach at Colorado from 2006-08.

Kelly came to the Ducks in 2007 as offensive coordinator under coach Mike Bellotti and is credited with creating Oregon's innovative hurry-up spread offense. Kelly went 46-7 at Oregon.

It had been widely expected that Kelly would jump to the NFL, leaving many surprised when he announced he was staying at Oregon after interviewing with Philadelphia, Cleveland and Buffalo following the Fiesta Bowl. Nine days later, however, he changed his mind and decided to go to the Eagles.

Just hours after Kelly's departure was announced, Oregon posted a job for a new head coach on its website. Under state law, Oregon was required to interview at least one qualified minority candidate for the job.

Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens said at the time that Oregon had already started the process of naming a replacement for Kelly following the Fiesta Bowl. He had set no timeline for replacing Kelly, except to say the Ducks would "move as fast as we can."

"We had already done a lot of groundwork, we had already started the process, knowing that Chip was going to be talking to the Eagles, Bills and Browns. We had geared up our process. We had obviously shut it down, but it's easy to click right back on."

At the time, Mullens also said there were internal candidates, but there was "no leader in the clubhouse."

Former Stanford offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton acknowledged Saturday that he interviewed with Oregon before he was hired by the Indianapolis Colts' to be their offensive coordinator.

Helfrich becomes the third straight offensive coordinator Oregon has promoted to head coach. Bellotti took over following Rich Brooks' departure.

Not much is expected to change under Helfrich, who is himself following Kelly's "Next Man In" philosophy.

As offensive coordinator, Helfrich has been in charge of Oregon's quarterbacks, guiding both Darron Thomas and redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota.

This season Mariota set the team's single-season record with 38 touchdowns (32 passing, 5 rushing, 1 receiving), surpassing the previous mark of 36 held by Thomas (2011) and Akili Smith (1998).

The first freshman named to the Pac-12's all-conference first team in 23 years, Mariota passed for 2,739 yards, completing a school-record 68.5 percent of his passes. He had 3,429 yards of total offense, second only to Smith's 3,947 in 1998.

Thomas, his predecessor, passed for 2,761 yards and a school-record 33 passing touchdowns his junior season last season despite missing a game because of an injury. He left school with a year of eligibility remaining in hopes of playing in the NFL but went undrafted.

Frost, 38, came to Oregon in 2009 after serving as an assistant at Northern Iowa. He played seven seasons in the NFL after leading the Huskers to the national title over Tennessee in the 1997 Orange Bowl.

Obama, Biden Swearing In Ceremonies

While an estimated 800,000 people are expected to gather in Washington D.C. Monday to watch President Obama be sworn in for a second term, his second term officially begins Sunday. He will take his oath of office in a private ceremony. Vice President Joe Biden was sworn in on Sunday morning at the Naval Observatory.

OBAMA SWEARING-IN:

-Obama will take the oath of office for a second term in a small ceremony in the Blue Room of the White House at 11:55 am. Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath.

-Obama will be sworn in using a Bible today that belonged to First Lady Michelle Obama's grandmother, LaVaughn Delores Robinson. The Robinson family Bible was a present from the first lady's father to his mother on Mother's Day in 1958, six years before Michelle's birth.

-Due to constitutionally-mandated scheduling, President Obama is set to become the second president in U.S. history to have four swearing-in ceremonies. Today will be his third. Obama was sworn in twice in 2008 out of an abundance of caution after Chief Justice John Roberts flubbed the oath of office.

Here is video of Obama's first swearing in by Roberts:

And Here is audio of Roberts administering the oath for a second time in 2009:

-Franklin Roosevelt was also sworn-in four times but, unlike Obama, he was elected four times.

-This year will mark the seventh time a president has taken the oath on a Sunday and then again on Monday for ceremonial purposes. Reagan last took the oath on a Sunday in 1985.

BIDEN SWEARING-IN:

-Vice President Biden was sworn-in at the Vice President's residence at the Naval Observatory, surrounded by his family and close friends.

-Biden personally selected Associate Justice Sotomayor, who will be the first Hispanic and fourth female judge to administer an oath of office.

-Three women have previously sworn-in presidents and vice presidents: Judge Sarah T. Hughes swore-in President Johnson in 1963; Justice Sandra Day O'Connor swore-in Vice President Dan Quayle in 1989; and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg swore-in Vice President Al Gore in 1997.

-On Sunday and Monday, Vice President Biden will be sworn in using the Biden Family Bible, which is five inches thick, has a Celtic cross on the cover and has been in the Biden family since 1893. He used it every time he was sworn in as a US Senator and when he was sworn in as Vice President in 2009. His son Beau used it when he was sworn in as Delaware's attorney general.

Bellator?s ratings on Spike were a mixed bag

The ratings news for Bellator's heavily hyped debut on Spike TV Thursday was decidedly mixed. The average viewership of 938,000 made it the most-watched show in the promotion's four-year history, though it lost nearly half of its audience that was delivered by TNA Impact Wrestling.

Bellator's move to Spike was precipitated by the end of the UFC's seven-year relationship with Spike in 2011. The UFC broadcast the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" on Spike in 2005 as a time buy, then stayed on the network for six more seasons.

When the UFC signed an exclusive seven-year deal with Fox in 2011 that put its live events and programming on Fox, FX and Fuel, Spike was without mixed martial arts content. But Spike parent Viacom owns a controlling interest in Bellator and not long after the UFC's departure, Spike and Bellator announced a broadcast relationship.

Spike had a non-compete clause with the UFC and could not air other promotions' MMA content in 2012, so it continued to air replays of UFC content through the year. But in January, Spike was free to air Bellator programming and quickly began, airing Bellator 360 on Jan. 3 and Jan. 10.

Both Spike and Bellator officials banked heavily on the fact that Spike's nearly 100 million television homes would dramatically improve Bellator's ratings. That, in fact, occurred.

The title doubleheader in Irvine, Calif., on Thursday that featured lightweight Michael Chandler defeating Rick Hawn and featherweight Pat Curran besting Patricio "Pitbull" Freire was nearly triple the greatest viewership in its history. Bellator drew 325,000 viewers to MTV2 for Bellator 44 on May 14, 2011. MTV2 is in about 81 million homes.

By that standard, Bellator MMA Live Thursday on Spike was a grand slam home run.

However, it failed significantly in several other categories. It had a strong lead-in from TNA Impact Wrestling, which averaged 1.82 million viewers, and failed to keep it. Bellator MMA Live shed 49 percent of the audience the wrestling show delivered. The number of males 18-34, which is MMA's primary demographic, was roughly the same for wrestling and Bellator. TNA Impact Wrestling drew 141,000 18-to-34-year-old males, while Bellator increased that slightly to 149,000.

The biggest concern for Spike and Bellator officials has to be its performance among 18-to-34 year-old males. Season 13 was the worst-perform year of The Ultimate Fighter, yet it still averaged 578,000 among men 18-34. That was 388 percent better than Bellator's performance Thursday among the same demographic.

The worst the UFC ever did on Spike among males 18-34 was at Ultimate Fight Night 22, when he it attracted 445,000 viewers in the demographic.

Bellator MMA Live also declined Thursday in six of its quarter hour segments, suggesting viewers turned away. A big reason likely is the time slot, given that it began airing live at 10 p.m. on the East Coast. Normally for fight cards on television, the final quarter hour segment or the final two quarter hour segments draw the highest viewership, because that is when the main event is airing. But in Bellator's case, the final two quarter hour segments were its lowest.

In the first 15-minute segment, Bellator hit its peak of 1.219 million viewers. That was still a 33 percent decline from the number Spike had watching wrestling. The show ran 12 minutes long, meaning there were nine quarter hour segments, and Bellator saw a drop from the previous quarter hour in six of them.

It averaged 1.219 million at the open, from 10 p.m. to 10:15 p.m., according to Nielsen numbers. That went to 1.025 million from 10:15 p.m. to 10:30, then ticked up slightly to 1.033 from 10:30 to 10:45. But it had a sharp decline from 10:45 to 11, dropping to 871 thousand viewers.

It also performed poorly against all 14 seasons of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike. The UFC's reality show had a high average viewership of 2.957 million viewers in Season 10, which featured Kimbo Slice. Its lowest-rated season was Season 13, which averaged just 1.38 million viewers.

It also didn't do as well as any of the 26 separate Ultimate Fight Night cards the UFC aired on Spike. The Fight Night cards were numbered Fight Night 1 through 25, with a special card called Ortiz-Shamrock as the 26th.

Those ratings ranged from an average of 4.169 for the third Tito Ortiz-Ken Shamrock fight to 1.151 million for Ultimate Fight Night 22 on Sept. 15, 2010.

It certainly wasn't a home run for Bellator and Spike, though it was not a disaster. The ratings were OK and need to go up to maintain advertiser interest. Significantly, Bellator is going to have to find a way to attract those 18-to-34 year-old males that advertisers covet for it become a long-term success.

The numbers it was attracting on MTV2 were genuinely disastrous, though the cards were aired in standard definition, not high definition. The first Bellator show on Spike was more like a single than a home run in terms of ratings performance, but there is at least room to grow.

Saudi's Mohammad Al Mojil to sue for over $100 million

KHOBAR, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - Financially troubled Saudi Arabian construction company Mohammad Al Mojil Group (MMG) plans to start legal action to collect dues and claims worth more than 400 million riyals ($107 million), it said on Sunday.

The company said it would take legal action against the Saudi unit of Britain's Petrofac , Saudi Binladin Group, and South Korea's SK Engineering and Construction , an affiliate of SK Holdings .

MMG, which is restructuring its operations after being hit by heavy losses and accumulated debt, said in a bourse statement that the legal action was coming after "all available solutions and options were exhausted".

It did not give details of the legal action. It added that it would take measures against other companies, but did not elaborate.

Officials at Saudi Binladin and the Saudi operations of Petrofac and SK Engineering were not immediately available to comment.

In November last year, shareholders in MMG rejected the idea of liquidating the company, which is involved in oil and gas projects, mainly for state oil company Saudi Aramco .

The company's recovery plan includes asset sales, cutting bank debt and absorbing accumulated losses.

MMG is involved in building part of Aramco's Wasit gas program, as well as the Aramco-Sinopec refinery in Yanbu, among others. It has branches in the United Arab Emirates.

(AP) ? Lindsey Vonn is back at full speed.

Vonn won a World Cup downhill Saturday for her first victory in more than five weeks, beating overall leader Tina Maze by nearly half a second.

And most importantly, she's back to being fully healthy after a nasty bacterial problem that ate away the muscles in her powerful legs and sapped her energy the last few months.

"I'm excited to be racing and I have that fire again and I trust that my body is strong enough to ski the way I want to ski," Vonn said. "It wasn't always the case in all the races this year. I'm back to my old self and it's a good feeling."

Vonn clocked 1 minute, 38.25 seconds down the sun-drenched Olympia delle Tofane course. Current overall leader Tina Maze finished second, 0.43 seconds behind, and Vonn's American teammate Leanne Smith was third, 0.89 back.

After failing to finish two consecutive races in France in mid-December ? including an uncharacteristic fall in downhill, the discipline she's Olympic champion in ? Vonn left the circuit for 27 days and missed six races. Having been hospitalized with an intestinal illness in November, she wondered whether she would win again this season.

"When I decided to take the break, I was so weak," said Vonn, adding that doctors never figured out exactly what type of bacterial problem she had. "I didn't know if I was going to be able to build enough strength back up in that short time to be able to race. My legs were skinny, I lost all my muscle, I had no endurance. I really was struggling physically to be where I was before."

Vonn didn't touch her skis during her time off in the United States.

"I was off snow completely," she said. "I was just in the gym working out two to three times a day, doing a lot of endurance training, a lot of weight training ? just really trying to get back to where I was in the fall, before I got sick."

In her first races back last weekend in St. Anton, Austria, Vonn finished sixth and fourth in a downhill and super-G, respectively.

This time, there was no stopping her.

Vonn made a slight error midway down and nearly touched her right hip to the snow. But she had the strength to regain her balance and keep charging.

"I finally feel like myself again," said Vonn, who was already celebrating and smiling before the came to a stop in the finish. "I feel healthy, finally, and I'm able to ski the way I want to. It's good to be back on top."

The race was held in perfect conditions, with temperatures well below the freezing mark making for hard snow, and clear skies allowing fans to marvel at the jagged snow-dusted peaks, which are some of the most spectacular in the Dolomite Range.

Vonn earned her seventh win in Cortina and the 58th of her career, moving within four of the all-time record held by Austrian legend Annemarie Moser-Proell.

"St. Anton was a good performance, but definitely not my best," Vonn said. "Cortina is a place where I've had a lot of success, so I knew what I needed to do and I was finally able to put all of the pieces together."

Vonn's last win was a super-G on Dec. 8 in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

For Maze, it was her first podium of the season in downhill ? having already registered wins in three other disciplines.

"I feel like I can be on the podium in every event," the Slovenian said.

Maze extended her massive lead in the overall standings to 670 points ahead of Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany, who lost control toward the end of her run and did not finish.

It was the second podium of Smith's career, having finished second in a downhill in Val d'Isere, France, last month.

"I just wanted to be smooth today," said Smith, who blew her knee out on this course four years ago. "I felt like I over-edged a little bit in training yesterday because the snow feels so good. It's really important in downhill to be smooth and consistent and barely edge your way down the course."

With Alice McKennis having won in St. Anton last weekend and Stacey Cook finishing second to Vonn twice in Lake Louise, Alberta, at the start of the season, it's the first time four different American women have reached the podium in downhill in a single campaign.

Vonn leads the downhill standings 129 points ahead of Cook, McKennis is fourth, Smith sixth, Mancuso 11th and Laurenne Ross ? who also has podium potential ? 21st.

"It's fun to be on the podium with your teammates," Vonn said. "Everyone is feeding off each other. We have a great energy about the team right now."

Racing continues in Cortina on Sunday with a super-G, a race Vonn has won the last three years.

"Right now I'm just trying to focus on one race at a time," Vonn said when asked if she could reach Moser-Proell this season. "It's definitely possible if I continue to ski like I did today."

Katie Price Confirms Wedding: 'Physic Said I'd Marry'

08:53, Friday, 18 January 2013

Katie Price has confirmed reports that she has married stripper Kieran Hayler, telling The Sun she made the decision based on the advice of a medium.

Yesterday (17th January), it was claimed that Price - a.k.a. Jordan - had said 'I do' for the third time, marrying Hayler on a beach in the Bahamas with only six guests present.

Despite only dating the hunky 25-year old for two months, images have now emerged in The Sun of the couple tying the knot - with one of Price's boobs popping out as she threw her wedding bouquet into the air.

The glamour girl went on to explain how she secretly married Kieran after visiting a psychic, telling the tabloid: "A medium said the man I?d marry was called Kevin. Kieran?s name is close to Kevin and it all became clear.

?As usual, I get a hard time for my choices because I?m me ? I still don?t really understand why. This is only my third marriage. I did my own Pricey Marriage Survey and discovered I was in good company.

"Joan Collins has been married five times, Liz Taylor did eight and Zsa Zsa Gabor nine. So there! I get stick, but no one has picked on them for all the marriages they?ve had.?

Price and Hayler got engaged after he proposed to her over Christmas dinner, with the mum-of-three saying at the time: "It just feels right. I know what people will say about me because I've heard it all before.

"But life is short so when something feels right, I just go for it."

The 34-year old has previously been married to Peter Andre and Alex Reid, as well as calling off her engagement to Argentinian model Leandro Penna in October.

As you submit articles, you will be more able to separate the hue of hits or bites you are delivery. For example, I have unconcealed that any pond within Self Improvement generally gets much flurry or nearby are a lot more than aquatic vertebrate display the bait, that individual the piece. Finally, your test rank linking the lure and the boat is how you get them into your boat. For me that examination formation is my motorcar responder campaigns. Using the assets box, I put up distinguishable commerce campaigns mistreatment an automotive vehicle communicator.

A victorious catch is when the lure it understood or the URL is clicked and later the aquatic vertebrate or student signs up for thing at liberty specified as an email classes to a release tittle-tattle. If the experiment column is the accurate weight, past I should be able to photographic film in that aquatic vertebrate closer to the craft.

My eventual objective is I poorness the fish to increase into my craft and lift the bait, catch rank and doughnut.

If you are victimisation Internet article mercantilism as a strategy, think this inference to find out if you are:

  • Fishing in the word-perfect pond
  • Using the accurate bait
  • Having the precise oral exam line
  • Utilizing the priggish reeling skills
  • Allowing the aquatic vertebrate to bounce into your boat

Who knows, perchance you will block a lot more fish?

Hockey East Weekend Preview: Northeastern and Boston University square off in Beanpot Preview, Massachusetts travels to Conte Forum, Merrimack and Maine play two

Starting Thursday night, the Hockey East weekend kicks off with a great game between the Friars and Riverhawks, who carry a seven game winning streak into the game. Friday night, Northeastern will travel to Agganis to take on No. 9 BU in a preview of the Beanpot Tournament and on Saturday, No. 18 Lowell will take on the Terriers in this weekends marquee matchup.

#18 UMass-Lowell vs. Providence (Thursday)

Coming into an early start to the weekend, the Riverhawks are on a tear. Norm Bazin and his squad have won their past seven games, and are creating quite a stir in Lowell. Their next opponent, Providence will look to put a halt to an ideal start of the second half, and they have a realistic shot at doing so. This past Monday, freshman goaltender Jon Gillies of the Friars collected Hockey East Co-Rookie of the Week honors after his role in a weekend sweep of UMass-Amherst. So far this season, Gillies has posted a 1.95 goals against average and .931 save percentage, ranking him first in the Hockey East in both categories.

In Lowell, all facets of the team?s play are running smoothly. Offensively, the team is led by sophomore Scott Wilson (Pittsburgh Penguins) with 18 points (7+11=18). Earlier this week, Wilson was named Hockey East Player of the Week following a 5 point weekend against Vermont. Defensively, Freshman netminder Connor Hellebuyck (Winnepeg Jets) has played well when called upon, and appears to have emerged as the new starting goalie in Lowell. In 7 starts, Hellebuyck has a 1.69 goals against average complemented by a .939 save percentage.

Merrimack at Maine (Friday/Saturday)

After meeting this past Saturday, the Black Bears and Warriors will square off for two games in Orono, Maine. this weekend. In the previous match-up, Merrimack defeated Maine with ease, scoring six goals to the Black Bears zero. Junior goaltender Sam Marotta posted 30 saves and a shutout in the victory. So far this season, Marotta has been mediocre, posting a .924 save percentage while allowing 2.15 goals per game. Offensively, the Warriors are led by junior Mike Collins with 24 points (11+13=24) on the year. Last Saturday against the Black Bears, Collins posted two goals as well as an assist in the win.

As for Maine, the Black Bears have not shown any improvement following their return from winning the Florida College Hockey Classic. After defeating Minnesota-Duluth and Cornell to win the tournament championship, there appeared to be a new team that would take the ice at Alfrond Arena. However, following the tournament, the Black Bears have only picked up one win, splitting a weekend series with Mercyhurst, tying Northeastern, and losing to Merrimack last weekend.

Northeastern vs. #9 Boston University (Friday)

Friday night?s tilt between the Terriers and Huskies will give Hockey East fans a little taste of one of the most prestigious College Hockey tournaments in the nation. Looking forward, on February 4, these two teams will meet for the second time of the season in the opening round of the Beanpot Tournament. So far this season, Northeastern has been led by freshman Kevin Roy (Anaheim Ducks). The first year forward has posted 20 points (9+11=20) so far this season, while being complemented by senior Cody Ferriero (San Jose Sharks) with 13 points (7+6=13) of his own. In net, senior netminder Chris Rawlings has proved solid with a 2.34 goals against average and .927 save percentage.

On the other side of the ice skates the Terriers. Jack Parker?s squad has been excellent so far this season, especially with their young, inexperienced players that have been forced to grow up fast. Apart from freshman stand-outs Matt Grzelcyk (Boston Bruins), Danny O?Regan (San Jose Sharks) , and Matt O?Connor, the Terriers have also seen production from some upper classmen. Cason Hohmann, who leads the team with 20 points (6+14=20) and Wade Megan (Florida Panthers)(11+7=18) have proven strong all year and will look to test Rawlings Friday night at Agganis Arena.

#2 Boston College vs. UMass Amherst (Friday)

Although the Eagles have defeated the Minutemen in their two previous match-ups this season, the victories have not been pretty. In the first bout, UMass went up on the defending national champions 3-0 through two periods and entered the final frame with a tight grasp on the game. Then the Eagles woke up. Led by senior forward Pat Mullane, the Eagles tied the game at four goals apiece with just a few minutes remaining and Johnny Gaudreau hit home an overtime rebound to escape Amherst with a victory. In the second meeting, the Eagles snuck out another victory after Patrick Brown scored with just 3:37 remaining to give BC a 3-2 advantage.

The Minutemen were riding high into last weekend following a tournament victory at the Ledyard Bank Classic in Hanover, N.H. However, UMass was slapped back to reality after getting swept by Providence in a weekend home and home series. As for the Eagles, they split a weekend series with No. 3 New Hampshire last weekend including a 5-2 victory on Friday at home, and a 2-1 loss on Saturday in Durham.

#2 Boston College vs. Northeastern (Saturday)

On Saturday, Boston College will head down the road to Matthews Arena to take on the Huskies in their third match-up of the season. In the early goings of the season, the Huskies saw the defending national champions early on in their schedule. In the first game, Northeastern upended the Eagles with a 3-1 victory at home, but dropped the second, getting shut out 3-0.

Providence vs. #3 New Hampshire (Saturday)

Following their toughest weekend facing the No. 2 Boston College Eagles, the Wildcats schedule doesn?t get much easier this weekend when they will take on the Friars. Tim Leaman?s squad has been the surprise of the Hockey East this season, posting a 9-8-3(7-4-2), and sitting comfortably in fourth place. Saturday will be the first of three meetings between the two sides this season. Last year, New Hampshire took all three victories including an overtime win in early February.

There is a reason that Dick Umile?s team has been highly ranked all season. The Wildcats have demonstrated an excellent balance of a highly skilled offense, complemented by a strong defense that has allowed UNH to accumulate a record of 14-4-2(9-3-1) this season. Offensively, Kevin Goumas leads the team and the league with 28 points (9+19=28), while defensively, goaltender Casey DeSmith has allowed 2.05 goals per game and posted a save percentage of .928.

#18 UMass Lowell vs. #9 Boston University (Saturday)

Shaping up to be the marquee matchup of the weekend, the Terriers will host the Riverhawks on Saturday night and try to put a halt to their recent winning streak. This will be the first of three match-ups between the two teams this season. Last year, the Riverhawks got the best of the Terriers, beating them twice out of three games.

Vermont vs. Penn State (Saturday)

Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, P.A. the Catmounts will take on the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Philadelphia College Hockey Faceoff. So far this season, Penn State has posted a record of 8-12 in their first season as a D1 hockey program. Statistically, the Nittany Lions have been led by Casey Bailey and David Glen with 18 points apiece.

As for the Catamounts, after getting swept by the UMass Lowell Riverhawks last weekend they are standing at 6-11-4(3-8-4) and seventh place in Hockey East. Offensively, Kevin Sneddon?s squad is led by senior captain Chris McCarthy with 18 points (6+12=18) on the year. Freshman goaltender Brody Hoffman has played well in his first year, posting a 2.95 goals against average with a save percentage of .902.

Apple to Set up Chinese RandD Facility

Published on:

?Apple is reportedly looking at setting up an R&D facility in China as it seeks to boost its smartphone sales in the country. Apple's CEO Tim Cook is said to have discussed the plans with Beijing's mayor, Wang Anshun during his recent trip to the country.

Although Apple sells its products in the country, it has struggled to secure a deal with the country's dominant mobile network, China Mobile - partly due to technology issues but reputedly mainly due to commercial disagreements. Increasing R&D investments in the country may make it easier for the company to overcome the technology difficulties and localise more of its content for the Chinese consumer.

The company will also migrate its Chinese iTunes store to be hosted on local servers within the confines of the Chinese firewall to speed up download times for local consumers.

(AP) ? The Colorado theater where 12 people were killed and dozens injured in a shooting rampage nearly six months ago reopened Thursday with a remembrance ceremony and a private screening of the fantasy film "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" for survivors ? but for some Aurora victims, the pain is still too much, the idea too horrific.

Several families boycotted what they called a callous public relations ploy by the theater's owner, Cinemark. They claimed the Texas-based company didn't ask them what should happen to the theater. They said Cinemark emailed them an invitation to Thursday's reopening just two days after they struggled through Christmas without their loved ones.

"It was boilerplate Hollywood ? 'Come to our movie screening,'" said Anita Busch, whose cousin, 23-year-old college student Micayla Medek, died at the theater.

But Pierce O'Farrill, who was wounded three times in the shooting, returned to the theater Thursday night and immediately walked to the back door where he remembers the gunman emerging.

"The last time I saw (the gunman) was right here," he said as he stood near the exit door. "It's important for me to come here and sit in the same seat that I was sitting in. It's all part of the healing process, I guess."

James Holmes, a former neuroscience Ph.D. student, is charged with 166 felony counts, mostly murder and attempted murder, in the July 20 shootings at the former Century 16 ? now called the Century Aurora. A judge has ordered Holmes to stand trial, but he won't enter a plea until March.

Dozens of first responders to the massacre joined survivors at the multiplex for Thursday's ceremony.

"We as a community have not been defeated," Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan said. "We are a community of survivors. We will not let this tragedy define us."

In addition to the "Hobbit" screening, theater placards featured "Trouble With the Curve," ''Cloud Atlas," and other films for the weekend.

Victims have filed at least three federal lawsuits against Cinemark Holdings Inc., alleging it should have provided security for the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," and that an exit door used by the gunman to get his weapons and re-enter should have had an alarm. In court papers, Cinemark says the tragedy was "unforeseeable and random."

"We certainly recognize all the different paths that people take to mourn, the different paths that people take to recover from unimaginable, incomprehensible loss," Hickenlooper said at the ceremony in a half-full theater.

"Some wanted this theater to reopen. Some didn't. Certainly both answers are correct," Hickenlooper said. He credited Cinemark CEO Tim Warner for flying to Colorado himself after hearing about the shooting to see what he could do.

Warner told attendees that the caring response by first responders, the community and the world to the tragedy was a testament that good triumphs over evil.

Vanessa Ayala is a cousin of Jonathan Blunk, a 26-year-old Navy veteran and father of two who was killed. Ayala said she believed the multiplex should have been torn down and, perhaps, turned into a park. At the very least, she said, the auditorium where the shooting occurred should be a memorial.

"It's not about letting the gunman win," Ayala said. "He's already lost. He's lost everything he's going to be. He's a moron."

The decision to reopen even divided at least one victim's family.

Tom Sullivan, whose son, Alex, was killed, had long planned to attend the event, stressing the importance of healing and of reclaiming the theater from tragedy.

"The community wants the theater back and by God, it's back," Sullivan said. "Nobody is going to stop us from living our lives the way that we lived our lives before. This is where I live."

Sullivan has said movies are a way for his family to come together, and that Alex was celebrating his 27th birthday when he was killed.

Alex's widow, Cassandra Sullivan, joined the boycott, however. So did Tom Teves, whose own son, Alex, also was killed.

"They can do whatever they want. I think it was pretty callous," Teves said.

Sandy Phillips, a San Antonio, Texas, businesswoman, lost her daughter, 24-year-old Jessica Ghawi, an aspiring sportscaster. She wasn't attending Thursday's ceremony.

Phillips said Thursday she understood the practicality of reopening the theater but wishes Cinemark had asked families about plans for the theater and how they would like their relatives to be honored.

"They could have avoided a lot of ill feeling," she said of the company.

Building plans called for turning theater nine, where Holmes allegedly opened fire, into an "extreme digital cinema." It wasn't known if there would be a memorial.

Cinemark reportedly spent $1 million on renovations. Before it did, it allowed survivors and families to visit theater nine. Jacqueline Keaumey Lader, a U.S. Marine and Iraq war veteran, did so.

"It does help significantly," she said. "It's taken the power away from the place."

Cinemark planned to temporarily open the theater to the public Friday and offer free movies through the weekend. It will permanently reopen Jan. 25.

Early treatment for HIV slows damage to immune system and reduces risk of transmission

Early treatment for HIV slows damage to immune system and reduces risk of transmission

Thursday, January 17, 2013

A 48-week course of antiretroviral medication taken in the early stages of HIV infection slows the damage to the immune system and delays the need for long term treatment, according to research published today in the New England Journal of Medicine (1). However, the delay was only marginally longer than the time already spent on treatment.

The study, the largest clinical trial ever undertaken looking at treating people with recent HIV infection, also suggests that the treatment lowers the amount of virus in the blood for up to sixty weeks after it is stopped, which potentially reduces the risk of onward transmission.

SPARTAC (Short Pulse Anti-Retroviral Therapy at HIV Seroconversion), a randomised controlled trial, took place over five years and involved 366 adults ? mainly heterosexual women and gay men ? from Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, South Africa, Spain, Uganda and the UK. It was funded by the Wellcome Trust and coordinated by researchers from Imperial College London and the Medical Research Council's Clinical Trials Unit, with immunology research conducted by the University of Oxford.

Unless regularly tested, most people will be unaware that they are HIV-positive during the first few years after they have become infected. Initial symptoms can be similar to flu or other viral infections, and for most people, there follows a period of many years when they carry the virus but are not sick. However, the immune system never successfully clears HIV; instead, the virus hides away, slowly weakening the body's defences and destroying CD4 T-cells, which play a key part in the immune response.

Without treatment, the immune system steadily becomes more compromised, leaving the individual at increased risk of developing other life-threatening infections. To stop this from happening, when the number of remaining CD4 T-cells reaches a certain level ? 350 cells per cubic millimetre ? international treatment guidelines recommend that an individual begins life-long treatment with antiretroviral drugs. These drugs not only prevent further damage to the immune system, but also allow it to recover.

Several observational studies have suggested that treatment at the time HIV infection occurs could delay the amount and speed of immune damage and so delay the need to start lifelong antiretroviral medication. SPARTAC is the first large randomised study to test this hypothesis.

All volunteers in the SPARTAC trial were identified within six months of becoming infected with HIV and were randomly allocated to receive antiretrovirals for 48 weeks, 12 weeks or to receive no medication (the standard practice in HIV management at this stage of infection). The researchers then measured the time until each volunteer's CD4 T-cell count fell below 350 cells per cubic millimetre and/or they began a lifelong course of antiretroviral medication.

The researchers found that on average, participants who had received no medication needed to begin taking a lifelong course of treatment 157 weeks after infection. Those in the group receiving antiretrovirals for 12 weeks began their lifelong course of treatment on average 184 weeks after infection (a delay of 27 weeks, but not considered by the researchers to be a significant effect).

However, those volunteers who received antiretrovirals for 48 weeks took an average of 222 weeks before beginning long term treatment ? a delay of 65 weeks. This represents an important delay compared with no treatment or 12 weeks of medication, but overall was not significantly longer than the time those participants had already spent on treatment.

In addition, over the whole time in the study, participants on the 48 week course had higher CD4 T-cell counts than those in the other two treatment groups, potentially reducing their risk of developing secondary infections such as tuberculosis. They also had lower levels of HIV in the blood for over a year after stopping treatment compared to the other volunteers, which could play a role in reducing the risk of passing on the virus to sexual partners.

The researchers found no evidence that treatment within the first six months of infection led to the virus becoming resistant to the drugs or that coming off the course led to unexpected deaths, or damage to the immune system.

A separate analysis of the results suggested that the 48-week treatment was more beneficial the closer it was started to the time of infection. Participants who were enrolled closer to the time of HIV infection tended to have faster declines in the number of CD4 cells if they did not receive treatment, indicating greater damage to their immune systems. It was amongst this group that the 48-week treatment appeared to have the biggest benefit. However, it is unclear why these people were coming to see a clinician so early after infection; the researchers believe it may be that they had felt unwell. More research focusing on people in the very early stages of infection, a challenging group to identify, needs to be done to confirm this observation.

Dr Sarah Fidler from Imperial College London, who led the study, says: "These results are promising and suggest that a year-long course of treatment for people recently infected with HIV may have some benefit on both the immune system as well as helping control the virus. The treatment also reduces the amount of virus in the body for some time after the patient has stopped taking the medication. This could be very important for helping reduce the risk of passing on the virus to a sexual partner."

Professor Jonathan Weber, the chief study investigator, says that the study reinforces the importance of frequent testing for HIV, particularly amongst high risk groups: "Early testing and diagnosis are incredibly important. When a person first contracts HIV, they are at their most infectious. But they are also often unaware that they have contracted the disease and hence are more likely to spread the infection. The sooner they can be diagnosed, the better our chances of limiting the spread of the virus and the sooner they can be offered appropriate guidance and counselling.

"If, as our study suggests, they can then be treated in such a way as to slow the progression of the disease and reduce their risk of secondary infections from potentially deadly diseases such as TB, then this offers a win-win situation."

Professor Gita Ramjee, Director of the South African Medical Research Council's HIV Prevention Research Unit, who led from the South African sites, adds: "We now need to weigh up whether the benefits offered by early intervention are outweighed by the strategic and financial challenges such a change in policy would incur, particularly in resource-poor settings such as Africa, although this may be where the most benefits are seen in terms of TB rates."

In the same edition of the New England Journal of Medicine a large observational study (2) of immune function amongst individuals with recent infection shows that early initiation of antiretroviral therapy ? within four months of infection ? is accompanied by an enhanced recovery of the immune system that is not seen to the same extent if treatment is started in later stages of infection. These findings support the main trial result of the SPARTAC study. In an accompanying editorial addressing both these studies, Walker and Hirsch comment that there is now increasing evidence of the value of early treatment to the individual and inferred benefit at a population level of reducing infectiousness.

Combating infectious diseases is one of the strategic priorities of the Wellcome Trust, which funded the SPARTAC study. Commenting on the research, Dr Jimmy Whitworth, Head of International Activities at the Wellcome Trust, said: "This study adds to increasing evidence that early initiation of HIV treatment is of benefit to the individual in preventing severe disease and in reducing infectiousness to his or her partners. Questions remain about whether a longer course at an early stage could be more beneficial or whether early treatment should be continued for life."

Tips And Advice For Dealing With Personal Bankruptcy | Finance ...

If you are facing the repossession of valuables, such as cars or jewelry, you may be feeling some fear. Put a stop to harassment by creditors and blaze a trail to a new financial future by declaring bankruptcy. Keep reading to gain useful insight about navigating the process.

If you know that you are about to file for bankruptcy, don?t exploit the information asymmetry and get huge cash advances on your credit cards. This is considered fraud, and even after bankruptcy you can be forced to pay all of that money back to the credit card company.

It is important to list all your assets and liabilities during the bankruptcy proceeding. Failure to do so will only cause you problems in the end. The person you choose to file with needs to know both the good and bad aspects of your finances. Don?t hold back information and create a strategy so you can deal with what?s really happening.

Don?t forget to enjoy your life once your finances get fixed. The filing process is extremely stressful for a lot of the people who go through it. The stress of dealing with bankruptcy could cause you to fall into a depression, unless you take steps to take care of yourself. You are getting a fresh start, and things will get better.

If you?re planning on filing bankruptcy, be sure that you don?t transfer your assets to another person within 12 months of the date you file. This is a very obvious attempt in hiding assets and could result in having your claim being rejected. Some assets cannot be taken away from you, including your home or your primary vehicle. Even so, it is never okay to try and hide assets, so delay filing if you have done that recently.

Ask those you know if they have an attorney to recommend, instead of finding one on the Internet or in the phone book. There are plenty of companies who know how to take advantage of people who seem desperate, and it?s important to be sure your bankruptcy can go smoothly; take your time and choose someone you can trust.

Always be honest with the information you give about your finances. As long as you are not hiding income or assets from the courts, you can ensure that there are no difficulties with your petition. This will save you from having your petition dismissed and your debts dropped from re-filing.

Some attorneys offer a phone service for free where creditors will be referred to when they wish to contact you regarding an account that?s delinquent. Then, a creditor can just call the number to verify that the money owed them is involved with a bankruptcy settlement. That will help you avoid them in the future.

Before filing for bankruptcy, learn your rights. Some bill collectors will tell you that your debts can?t be bankrupted. Only a few kinds of debt, like student loans or child support, are ineligible for bankruptcy. If your creditors are telling you any other kind of debts cannot be cancelled, get a written proof and send it to the general office of your state?s attorney to report this illegal behavior.

If you are feeling down, use the internet to chat with other people who have been through bankruptcy. Filing for bankruptcy can make you feel extremely alienated, even from your close friends. On the Internet, however, you can share your struggles and ask for advice from people who have already been through bankruptcy.

Rethink Getting Divorced

Do not file for bankruptcy unless you are sure this is the only option possible. Often companies will reach a settlement that is greatly reduced. Other times, they will help you find a repayment plan that you can manage. In addition to saving money, this will allow you to raise your credit score. Prior to filing, it might be a good idea to set up a loan for debt consolidation.

Credit cards with recent activity cannot be included in a bankruptcy. It is not unheard of for individuals to pay their tax bill with their credit card and subsequently file for bankruptcy protection. These filers think they?ll never have to actually pay that money back as it is now part of the credit card debt. Remember that even if you use a credit card to pay for your taxes while you file for bankruptcy, you are still going to owe the amount due.

It is important to protect your home when filing bankruptcy. Filing for bankruptcy does not mean you have to lose your home. Check your home?s current value to see if it has gained equity and get your first and second mortgage papers together. Otherwise, try looking into house exemptions that may let you remain in the home if you meet certain financial threshold requirements.

Chapter 7

When you are looking at a Chapter 7 personal bankruptcy, you may well have debts to worry about for which you share responsibility with another person, such as a spouse, family member, or business partner. Once you file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection, you no longer have legal responsibility for debts that you and any co-signers originally agreed to. However, if you had a co-debtor, they will be required to pay the debt.

When bankruptcy seem inevitable it is important not to use your retirement funds or emergency savings to pay creditors.
