Bad News for Obama in Latest Rasmussen Polls of Uncommitted Voters (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | In a video presentation, Scott Rasmussen of the Rasmussen Poll had some terrible news for Barack Obama and some puzzling news for Mitt Romney. The news concerned the attitude of currently uncommitted voters, 12 percent of the population.

Obama's approval number among uncommitted voters is only 20 percent. His disapproval number is an enormous 76 percent. That suggests that among people who have yet to make even a tentative decision on who to vote for president, Obama is extremely unpopular and will be hard for the president to win back over.

On the other hand, as much disdain as the uncommitted have for Obama, they have yet to decide on an alternative. This is a problem for Romney, as the front runner. He has to figure out how to attract these undecided voters, who have already rejected Obama, over to his corner.

The head to head match ups have bad news for Obama as well. Both Rasmussen and Gallup has the president tied with Romney at 45 percent and 48 percent respectively. Rasmussen also has Obama just two points ahead of Santorum, a candidate who has been an also ran since his razor thin victory in Iowa. Obama is eight points ahead of Gingrich, however.

Each of the polls consistently shows Obama at below 50 percent, a bad place to be for any incumbent. The rule of thumb among pollsters is that the undecided voters, the ones whom Rasmussen shows holds Obama in great disdain, usually break for the challenger.

This does not mean that Obama is doomed and that the Republicans could nominate a yellow dog and still win (though they might depending on the dog's views on taxes and immigration.) The numbers do mean that Obama is preparing to run for reelection with a great disadvantage. Using a Super Bowl metaphor, he is back by a touchdown going into the second quarter and the opposing team is on a roll.

Obama is hoping to run a Harry Truman come from behind campaign against a "do nothing Congress." That is not likely to work because the Senate is under the control of Democrats. The Republican House has been moving legislation to improve the economy, only to see it languish in the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has announced that for the third year running, the Senate will not pass a budget.

Do nothing Congress? Do nothing Senate, rather.

BOOTSTRAP ARTS FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FEBRUARY SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Month Long Series of Performing, Literary, Visual and Media Arts Events Presented By Artspire and New York Foundation for the Arts

NEW YORK, NYC - The Bootstrap Arts Festival, the month long series of arts events presented by Artspire and New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), has released its preliminary schedule of exhibits and performances. Set to take place throughout February and across the five boroughs, the Bootstrap Festival includes performing, literary, visual and media arts events.

The Festival kicks off with an opening night reception at NYFA on February 3. The kick-off event features works and performances across a spectrum of media by a number of Artspire affiliated artists. The accompanying Boot Camp exhibition at NYFA runs from now through May, 2012.

The Bootstrap Arts Festival has emerged out of NYFA's on-going Artist as Entrepreneur Boot Camp, a program for arts professionals in all fields looking to focus on the business side of their creative practice. NYFA's Boot Camp is designed to help define concrete steps to building a business plan that can lead to greater financial security.

The first Bootstrap Arts Festival was held in November, 2010 and featured artists who had attended NYFA's Boot Camp. The 2012 festival continues and expands on that theme as it offers Boot Camp graduates venues and opportunities for exhibiting and/or performing their work.

Both Bootstrap and Boot Camp are key elements within NYFA's broad-based effort to provide a template for arts professionals that enables them to develop as entrepreneurs by offering support, education and resources. The most prominent tent pole initiatives within this ambitious plan are the recently launched Artspire.org and the new book The Profitable Artist (Skyhorse Publishing/Allworth Press).

Artspire.org is the new community website that empowers individual arts professionals and organizations anywhere in the country to support their work with tax-deductible contributions while building entrepreneurship and creating a robust social network of supporters. With Artspire, artists can leverage the dynamic power of crowdsourced funding to galvanize, tap into and expand their roster of followers, thus building sustained financial backing for their work.

The Profitable Artist is the first complete "how-to" guide to being a professional and profitable working artist. This handbook features techniques in the areas of strategic planning, financial management, marketing, fundraising, and legal rights and obligations, aimed to assist all arts professionals. Further closing the circle, many of the lessons in The Profitable Artist were first developed during NYFA Boot Camp. Some of the artists who have taken part in Boot Camp are also in the book.

Mohammad Amir freed after completing his sentence ? Cricket News Update

Pakistan?s spot-fixing tainted left-arm pacer, Mohammad Amir, has been released from Portland Young Offenders Institution after he was given a sentence of six-months by Southwark Crown Court for his involvement in spot-fixing.

The bowlers has, however, been released after serving half of his punishment is now free to leave for his native country Pakistan.

The youngster has a visa till March of this year, which means there is no chance of him being deported by the British authorities at the moment.

According to sources Amir after consultation with his lawyers, would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in a bid to challenge his five-year ban from the game of cricket which was imposed on him by an International Cricket Council (ICC) tribunal after he was found guilty of taking bribes to deliberately bowl no-balls against England in the Lord?s Test during the summer of 2010.

Amir was banned alongside fellow pacer Mohammad Asif and skipper Salman Butt, as evidence suggested that the three players took bribes from bookie Mazhar Majeed.

However, the whole fiasco was brought to light by now a defunct British tabloid ?News of the World? which had actually carried out a sting operation where an undercover journalist paid Majeed to influence the three players.

In a video footage, released by the tabloid, Majeed boasted about the influence that he had on the Pakistani players and could ask the cricketers to give a performance according to his demands.

The release of this evidence wrecked havoc in the cricketing world as it had never experienced such a scandal in its entire history.

The three players were immediately barred from participating in the remainder of the series and were later investigated by the law enforcement agencies.

After the fiasco, the ICC revamped its anti-corruption unit and imposed on the member cricket boards to make enforces strict rules and regulations in order to restrict the players from taking part in corrupt practices.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken serious steps in this regards, where the board has introduced new clauses in the contracts of the players warning them severe consequences for getting involved in illegal practices.?

Why Should You Use Vibration Plate Machines | New Health and ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

Vibration plate machines are the new kids in the street when considering domestic exercise. They have been stashed at NASA and in professional sports gyms for quite a while and have been the subject of a lot of research. But now, they have now become much more fashionable as more and more people recognise the additional benefits you may get.

The key reasons they are rising in popularity are IMHO, a lower cost and faster benefits from your exercise endeavours.

Where previously vibration plate machines were only affordable to the few, now they have come down in cost and can be bought from as low as $150 for a very basic model. While these have some benefits, you really need to spend twice that to have any significant benefit. This is because a few of the really cheap ones just are not strong enough. You may of course pay much more if you absolutely need the ?bells and whistles? or are a professional sportsman who may really benefit more, but for most, a middle range machine will probably be just fine.

Now of course, the primary feature of the machines is you get a real bonus when it comes to your time and effort. This is because for each ten minutes exercise you perform on the plates, your body thinks it has had sixty minutes! No brainer really.

Now, not everybody may use them unfortunately. For instance, for those who have recently had surgery, have a pacemaker fitted, are pregnant etc., then it?s good judgment to not use them. But you will find benefits for other conditions. In particular, research has shown that frequent use of vibration plate machines can improve bone density considerably, when assessed against control groups who did not use this form of exercise. This of course has an obvious benefit for women who may be prone to osteoporosis. Even if you find it difficult to exercise normally due to arthritis perhaps, this is an impact free method of exercise. Even though you just stand on the equipment on a low setting, your muscles will be exercised. Other studies have also shown an increase in weight reduction when included in conjunction with a calorie controlled diet. And of course, in the sports world they?ve been used for years to aid and shorten rehabilitation following some injuries.

The benefits occur because basically, your brain thinks it is standing on an unstable surface and this triggers the muscles to work to compensate. Add this to the any exercises you might perform on the plates (e.g. leg squats and knee flexes) and you have multiple benefits.

Vibration plate machines are really worth more exploration, but even though this is not an impact exercise and you will not shaken so hard you?ll fall off? if you know you are fit and healthy, please consult your medical professional to make sure you are able to benefit from them.

You will discover more details on the research, suggested vibro plate exercises and our recommendations for vibration machines at www.vibroplateexercises.com.

UNH scientists: Sun delivered curveball of powerful radiation at Earth

DURHAM, N.H. A potent follow-up solar flare, which occurred Friday (Jan. 27, 2012), just days after the Sun launched the biggest coronal mass ejection (CME) seen in nearly a decade, delivered a powerful radiation punch to Earth's magnetic field despite the fact that it was aimed away from our planet.

According to University of New Hampshire scientists currently studying and modeling various aspects of solar radiation, this was due to both the existing population of energetic particles launched by the first CME and a powerful magnetic connection that reeled particles in towards Earth from the Sun's blast region, which had spun to an oblique angle.

"Energetic particles can sneak around the 'corner,' as was the case in Friday's event when it was launched at the Sun's limb, or edge," says astrophysicist Harlan Spence, director of the UNH Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space (EOS) and principal investigator for the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation (CRaTER) instrument onboard NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission. CRaTER is designed to measure and characterize aspects of the deep space radiation environment.

Space weather events can disrupt Earth-based power grids, satellites that operate global positioning systems and other devices, can lead to some rerouting of flights over the polar regions, and pose severe risk to astronauts beyond low-Earth orbit.

The first explosion, which occurred Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, fell just short of being rated an X-class flare the most powerful type of solar storm. When Friday's X-flare exploded from the same sunspot region that was the source of the week's earlier blast, the Sun's west limb was pointing away from Earth.

Nonetheless, the resulting high-energy protons that speed toward Earth even faster than the four-million-mile-per-hour solar wind demonstrated that dangerous "space weather" can affect us even when the planet is not in the direct path.

"The magnetic field lines on which energetic particles travel curve from the Sun to Earth unlike CMEs, which travel in straight lines. In the case of the second flare, energetic particles were magnetically connected to Earth even though the second CME from this active region missed us entirely," explains Madhulika Guhathakurta, lead program scientist of NASA's Living with a Star program.

Notes Spence, "And the situation was worsened, from the standpoint of radiation, because there was a pre-existing energetic particle population, from the first CME, when the second one arrived."

CRaTER's primary goal has been to characterize the global lunar radiation environment and its biological impacts. It does so by measuring galactic and solar cosmic radiation from behind a "human tissue-equivalent" plastic. During the two and a half years the LRO mission has been making measurements, the latest solar events are the most significant with respect to incoming radiation.

"We now have estimates of the dose and can speak to the biological impacts that might have occurred in deep space to astronauts," says Michael Wargo, NASA's chief lunar scientist.

Both events, while strong forms of space weather, were not as powerful as the 2003 Halloween storms, which were the most powerful space weather events of the last 22 years. But as the Sun moves towards solar maximum in 2013, it may yet have even more powerful storms to deliver as it becomes increasingly violent.

Measurements from CRaTER, and predictions from the UNH Earth-Moon-Mars Radiation Environment Module (EMMREM), whose principal investigator is astrophysicist Nathan Schwadron of the EOS Space Science Center, describe radiation exposure in space, on the Moon, and in planetary environments. The resulting understanding of space radiation hazards becomes evermore critical in studying and predicting the effects of these powerful solar outbursts.

Notes Guhathakurta, "The use of EMMREM to characterize active events highlights our rapidly advancing capabilities for understanding, characterizing, and even predicting the radiation coming from our increasingly active Sun."

Romney rebounds with Florida primary win

/

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney and his wife Ann address a primary election night event in Tampa, Florida, January 31, 2012 after trouncing main rival Newt Gingrich in Florida's Republican primary.

By Michael O'Brien, msnbc.com

?

Updated 9:38 p.m. ET

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney staked his claim to the distinction of being the frontrunner for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination with a win Tuesday in Florida?s Republican primary.

Romney easily won?the contest, which was limited to only registered Republican voters, followed by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, the winner of the Jan. 21 South Carolina GOP primary, in a distant second. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum finished third, and Texas Rep. Ron Paul came in fourth.

Romney, in remarks shortly after polls closed, turned his attention back to President Obama and sought to project Republican unity. Gingrich, meanwhile, defiantly vowed to carry on in his presidential bid, all the way through August's Republican convention.

Romney?s victory reflects a rebound in his fortunes over the past 10 days, during which Gingrich had initially seemed to be charging into Florida with momentum after the Palmetto State victory. The ex-speaker seemed to emerge as a primary threat to Romney?s shot at the nomination, mostly by stoking doubts among conservatives about the former Massachusetts governor?s ideological core.

But Gingrich ran into a barrage of advertising in Florida sponsored by both the Romney campaign and a super PAC working on Romney?s behalf, which questioned the baggage Gingrich had accumulated as speaker, and pointed to the work Gingrich had done as speaker on behalf of troubled mortgage giant Freddie Mac after leaving office.

Mitt Romney addresses supporters after winning the Florida Republican primary, insisting that the heated primary prepares the eventual candidate, and attacking President Obama on the economy and healthcare.

Romney made a veiled reference to the hard-fought Florida battle in his remarks, in which he sought to posture himself as the GOP's standard-bearer.

"A competitive primary does not divide us, it prepares us. And we will win," Romney said, adding later: "I stand ready to lead this party and to lead our nation."

The Romney campaign and the super PAC, Restore Our Future, outspent the Gingrich campaign and a super PAC supporting the former speaker by a 4-to-1 ratio in Florida, a testament to the effectiveness of negative advertising, especially in a large, expensive state that prizes TV ads.

The contest had essentially become a two-man showdown in Florida, since Santorum and Paul ? the two other remaining GOP candidates ? scarcely competed in Florida, and barely spent any resources in the state.

Gingrich, in his remarks following Florida's results, said the race would be a two-person race going forward as well.

"It is now clear that this will be a two-person race between the conservative leader, Newt Gingrich, and the Massachusetts moderate," the former speaker said of the results in Florida. "We are going to contest every place, and we are going to win, and we are going to be in Tampa as the nominee in August."

Romney's victory over Gingrich, though, was mostly complete, spreading most parts of the state, and he besting Gingrich among every age, race, gender and income group, according to exit poll data. Romney did particularly well with women, who made up almost half of the primary electorate, and Latinos ? who, in Florida, were mostly Cuban voters.

Romney also performed well with voters who rated the economy as their top issue, and voters who named the ability to beat President Obama as the most important quality in a candidate. Both are core strengths of Romney?s candidacy, and Gingrich edged Romney in both categories in South Carolina.

But while the former Massachusetts governor beat Gingrich among self-described conservatives as a whole, but exit poll data suggest that Romney still faces challenges in winning over the most conservative elements of the GOP.

Gingrich beat Romney among ?very conservative? voters in the primary, who made up about a third of the electorate. Strong supporters of the Tea Party ? who composed roughly 35 percent of voters ? also broke for Gingrich.

Newt Gingrich thanks his supporters in Florida, calling for help in defeating Mitt Romney's big money campaign, and outlines his plans for his first day in office as President of the United States.

And while Republican primary voters Tuesday in Florida expressed positive opinions of Romney as a person, about four in 10 voters said his positions on issues are insufficiently conservative.?Thirty-eight percent of primary voters said they wished another Republican candidate would enter the race, underscoring the lingering reluctance of Republicans ? especially conservatives ? to coalesce behind Romney.

But for as much as Romney took strides to tamp down Gingrich during the last 10 days in Florida, he turned his attention back to the president in much of his victory speech.

"Together, we will build an America where 'hope' is a new job with a paycheck, not a faded word on an old bumper sticker," he said.

Still, the primary battle is set to go forward, though Tuesday's contest?caps a relatively busy month for the Republican candidates, which saw Santorum eke out a victory in Iowa's Jan. 3 caucuses, and Romney decisively win New Hampshire's Jan. 10 primary.

The campaign is now set to enter a new phase, with a relatively dead period for candidates in the next month.

Nevada and Maine host caucuses on Saturday; Romney won in the former (which has a sizable Mormon population) in 2008. Colorado and Minnesota each hold caucuses on Feb. 7, too. Because caucuses typically favor candidates with money and organization, Romney and Ron Paul, who's focused intently on those contests, are expected to perform best.

Those are the only nominating contests until late February, when Arizona and Michigan host its primaries. The Wolverine State is expected to strongly favor Romney -- it' where he was raised and his father served as governor.

The structure of the calendar means that Romney could work to secure a stranglehold on the race for the nomination or, if nothing else, dismiss competitors like Gingrich with the kind of relentless advertising that took its toll on the former speaker in the last week.

Gingrich has defiantly vowed to take his candidacy all the way to the Republican convention, signifying the prospect of a prolonged battle for delegates. The former speaker might have his best chance to pick up some of those delegates on March 6 -- the "Super Tuesday" of the 2012 cycle, when a number of southern and more conservative-leaning states, which tend to favor Gingrich, hold their nominating contests.

Santorum commented on the results in Nevada after a town hall, arguing that the Florida results show that he -- and not Gingrich -- was the candidate best positioned to challenge Romney.

"We need another alternative, we need someone who doesn't have the baggage, and the personal issues as well as the inconsistencies in policies that Newt has to be the clear alternative Mitt Romney," he said.

The former Pennsylvania senator also took aim at Romney, promising to deliver a speech on Wednesday on "Romneycare and Obamacare."

NBC's Andrew Rafferty contributed reporting.

Rick Santorum speaks before supporters in Nevada after placing third in Florida's primary, and stresses the need for the Republican candidates to elevate the tone of their campaigns and argue the issues instead of attacking each other's character.

Ukraine shuts down leading file-sharing site

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? Ukrainian authorities have shut down a popular file-sharing website saying it violates copyright laws, officials said Wednesday.

Interior Ministry Spokesman Volodymyr Polishchuk said that Ex.ua was closed Tuesday after complaints from Microsoft, Adobe and other companies. The ministry said it has confiscated 200 servers that were used to support the website and law enforcement agents were questioning 16 of its employees.

The Recording Industry Association of America has named Ex.ua among the world's worst Internet piracy sites.

Shortly after Ex.ua went down Tuesday, the Interior Ministry's own website became inoperable. Polishchuk said this was likely a work of hackers.

Ex.ua representatives could not be immediately reached for comment.

Millions of Ukrainians have uploaded and downloaded music, movies, and software from the website since it was founded in 2009.

Iolo System Mechanic 10.7

If sluggish PC performance is giving you the blues, you'd do well to invest in the $39.95 Iolo System Mechanic 10.7, a utility suite?designed to blow the virtual dust out of worn machines by repairing the registry, defragging the hard drive, and eliminating files that stymie snappy performance. Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 serves up a host of new features not present in previous builds we've reviewed, including Designated Drivers which manages drivers in an attempt to keep your PC problem free. All in all, Iolo System Mechanic remains one of the best PC tune-up utilities around, as it digs deep, cleans up PCs well, and offers informative, easy-to-understand help about the problems that plague computers.

System Requirements and Interface
Compatible with Windows 7, Vista, and XP PCs, Iolo System Mechanics 10 requires just 30MB of disk space, 256MB of RAM, and an Internet connection for activating the license.?Unlike most PC tune-up utilities such as TuneUp Utilities 2012 (4 stars, $49.95), which limit you on the number of licenses, Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 lets you install the software on any number of computers provided that it's not for business purposes?a welcome feature in the age of the multi-PC household.

The interface looks very similar to previous entries in the Iolo System Mechanic family with the familiar red-white-and-blue color scheme. Like the previous version of System Mechanic, this version has several options in the left pane (Overview, Problems, Automated Tasks, Anti-malware, Firewall, All-in-One Tools, Individual Tools) the content of which appears in the main pane when clicked.

Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 also installs a useful widget on the desktop that gives you at-a-glance PC health and security readings. From this widget, you can launch any number of Iolo System Mechanic 10.7's features to begin the clean up process.

The Clean Up Process
The Overview screen opens by default when the program is launched, and it's where the "Analyze Now" button lives. Clicking the arrow next to it opened drop-down box that presented two choices: "Perform Quick Analysis" and "Perform Deep Analysis." The former is a one- to two-minute scan that looks for the most common PC problems; the latter is a five- to seven-minute scan that checks for all problems. Considering the heavy use that our test laptop had received, I went with the second option. Approximately six minutes later finished the scan and uncovered over 2,000 problems.

Beneath the reading appeared a highlighted message: "Boost speed and stability by removing redundant programs with CRUDD Remover." CRUDD is Iolo's acronym for Commonly Redundant or Unnecessary Decelerators and Destabilizers?fancy talk for duplicate programs that clog your system. The idea behind CRUDD Remover is to eliminate those extra programs as each application install theoretically slows your PC's performance a bit. After running CRUDD Remover, 9 problems were detected on the PC, which were explained in wonderful detail on the "Problems" screen.

What I found truly cool was that Iolo System Mechanic 10 didn't just serve up a number?it provided blurbs that explained why these problems negatively impact performance. I checked off all nine problems, clicked the "Repair All" button, and performed the required reboot. Performing another deep scan revealed that all but one problem was fixed, and that straggler was one beyond Iolo System Mechanic 10.7's scope: No installed anti-malware program was detected on the system.

I also ran Iolo's patent-pending Program Accelerator, which smartly re-aligns all of a program's dependent files on the hard drive. It's touted as being better than disk defragmenters, which can blindly compact and separate files even more. Program Accelerator took approximately 15 minutes for to work its magic, and, when it was done, I discovered that it had re-aligned over 30,000 files and eliminated nearly 100 file fragments. Four further files were defragmented after a restart.

Performance Improvements
I tested Iolo System Mechanic 10.7's ability to whip a PC back into shape by performing three tests?running the Geekbench system performance tool, measuring boot times, and transferring a 1.1GB folder of mixed media to external storage?before and after running the software to compare the computer's potency. Each test was run three times and averaged. Before AVG PC Tuneup 2011 scrubbed the system, the 2-GHz Intel Core i7 X990 Style-Note notebook with 4GB of RAM, and an 80GB Intel SSD drive achieved a 5,903 Geekbench score, booted in 50.3 seconds, and transferred the 1.1GB folder in 40.5 seconds.

After using Iolo System Mechanic 10.7, the system saw the most improved performance of all the tune-up utilities tested: The GeekBench score rose to 6064 (better than TuneUp Utilities 2012's 6045); the boot time decreased to just 37.1 seconds (on a par with TuneUp Utilities 2012's 37 seconds). The file transfer speed dropped to 40.8 seconds (swifter than TuneUp Utilities 2012's 41.1 seconds).?The overall system performance was incredibly fast and snappy?windows and menus opened in a blink.

Designated Drivers and NetBooster
Designated Drivers, a new feature to version 10.7, helps you find and install safe drivers for your computer?drivers that have been tested and certified by Microsoft. I liked that this driver utility is a part of Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 and not a separate application (which is the case with SlimWare Utilities SlimCleaner and SlimWare Utilities DiverUpdate). Designated Drivers found two driver updates for my PC, but Slimware Utilities DriverUpdate found a whopping 74.

The NetBooster internet booster is designed to stabilize and speed up your internet connection by optimizing settings?Iolo states that it's beneficial to run it before playing Web-connected video games and assists in opening Web pages faster. Cracked.com loaded in 5.9 seconds before running NetBooster, which decreased slightly (after clearing the browser's Internet history, rebooting, and activating the tool) to 5.3 seconds?a marginal increase.

Should You Use Iolo System Mechanic 10.7?
The answer is a resounding yes. Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 has simple interface, easy-to-understand problem definitions, and a deep array of performance-enhancing tools that produce excellent all-around scores. Iolo System Mechanic remains the PC tune-up-utility champion.
